<image:title>Holiday Gallery - Rose & Antler Samhain Shrine</image:title>
<image:caption>If there were to be a High Holy Day in Rose & Antler, it would be Samhain. Pronounced "Sow-en", Samhain celebrates the third and final harvest. One would think that the Wheel of the Year would begin elsewhere, and in some traditions that is the case. But the final harvest draws to a close a year-long cycle of planning, sowing, growing, harvesting and sacrifice. Samhain therefore celebrates the culmination of this year's struggle and accomplishment. This is considered Pagan New Year, and the first of two hinge holidays, Beltane being the other. On Samhain we make vows, setting intentions and goals to accomplish in the next 6 months.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It is believed that Samhain is a time of great transparency between our world, and Other Worlds, that "the Veil" is at its thinnest. Because of this, we take it as an opportunity to honor and communicate with those beyond the Veil, and help facilitate the crossing over of all the souls who have passed in the last year. We place images and symbols of our loved ones on the shrine.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I actually get a jump on Samhain decor because it's my favorite time of year. Instead of preparing the house just before the holiday, the Samhain decorations go up weeks before, and remain until the beginning of December when I have to turn everything over for my annual Yuletide Christmakwanzukkah Festivus. This does mean Yule lasts almost two months and Mabon gets short shrift, but whattaya gonna do?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yule is the Winter Solstice, also known as Midwinter, Solstice Night and Norse New Year, the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The date of this sabbat varies from December 20 to December 23. Yule is when the dark half of the year relinquishes to the light half. Starting the next morning at sunrise, the sun climbs just a little higher and stays a little longer in the sky each day, and as such the sun's "rebirth" is celebrated with much joy. From this day forward until Litha, the days will become longer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, by many paths and peoples. Pagans used branches of it to decorate their homes during the winter solstice, a symbol of enduring life in the bleakness of Winter. The Romans used fir trees to decorate their temples at the festival of Saturnalia. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting life with God. So, bring in the green and rejoice the return of light and life!</image:caption>

Pour a 64 oz jug of spiced cider and a big bottle of ale into a large pot over medium heat. Add the cinnamon sticks. If working with apple juice, add orange and lemon peals. When simmering, reduce to low heat. Drain the apples quaters, then add them to the pot. Sprinkle ground cinnamon and ground ginger over the top. Add freshly ground nutmeg. Stir all together and cover. When the house smells amazing, it's almost done. Remove lid and top with a liberal pour of brandy. Ladle into mugs (remember to include an apple slice) and enjoy all Yule season and beyond, may it be blessed!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Wassailing is a very ancient custom that is rarely done today. The word 'wassail' comes from the Anglo-Saxon phrase 'waes hael', which means 'good health'. Originally, the wassail was a drink made of mulled ale, curdled cream, roasted apples, eggs, cloves, ginger, nutmeg and sugar. It was served from huge bowls, often made of silver or pewter. Wassailing was traditionally done on New Year's Eve and Twelfth Night, but some rich people drank Wassail on all the 12 days of Christmas.</image:caption>

Beltane is considered a "Hinge Holiday", and in Blue Star we use it to make 6 month vows that will take us to Samhain. <image:title>Holiday Gallery - Our Symbolic Beltane Bonfire</image:title>
<image:caption>Living in drought stricken Southern California, bonfires are hard to come by, unless we're heading to the beach and celebrating with the pagan community at large. Therefore, when necessary, Rose & Antler works symbolically. It is also our aim to celebrate the esbats (moons) and sabbats (holidays) on the actual day, rather than the closest convenient weekend. As such, with Beltane falling on a Monday in 2017, there were no Monday night bonfires going on in the immediate area! So behold, our symbolic Beltane bonfire, six pillar candles clustered together in the May Crown.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Fairies abound in Litha's lore, as the Fairie Queen revels with her consorts. There is, of course, Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, which is a prime example of fairie love and mischief. Midsummer is considered a powerful day to commune with the Fae, and ritual offering might include mead, milk, shiny objects and small, sweet treats. They each have a different hairstyle. I am unreasonably proud of this.</image:caption>

<image:caption>From here the days will grow shorter, the dark longer. It is important to take time at the solstices to recognize that the separation of the light and the dark has nothing to do with the concepts of good versus evil. Light is necessary for growth and expansion; dark for renewal, for rest and withdrawal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Holiday Gallery - The sun in all things...</image:title>
<image:caption>At Litha, the power of the sun is at its most potent, at its zenith, the longest day of the year. From here the light wanes towards the shortest day of the year, the winter solstice, Yule. So we celebrate the vigor of the sun, the height of the growing season before the harvest holidays arrive, and the decor and food reflects that. Like these golden beets I roasted with a chili powder mix to represent both the shape, color and heat of the sun.</image:caption>

For this salad I focused on representing the freshness of the season and the abundance the sun affords us. <image:title>Holiday Gallery - Post-Sunflower Litha Shrine</image:title>
<image:caption>Litha is both a fire and a water festival. So after the sunflowers have had their day, we replace them with a vase of blue marbles to represent the element of water. Why not just use water? Well, this is almost guaranteed to tip over at some point, the antlers were originally made to be worn. So it's either marbles everywhere or water everywhere!</image:caption>

<image:title>Holiday Gallery - Rose & Antler Lammas Shrine</image:title>
<image:caption>In Rose & Antler we celebrate Lammas because I personally connect with this aspect of the agrarian year, the first harvest of the grain, moreso than with Lughnasadh, the "Commemoration of Lugh", although in most neo-pagan traditions these holidays have become interchangeable. All wheat, all the time. Bake all the bread. </image:caption>

<image:caption>At Lammas, the Corn King is sacrificed, cut down during the grain harvest. In America, "corn" refers to the cob, but refers to grain in general throughout per-Christian agrarian societies in the British Isles. However, to symbolize the importance the Americas put on corn, as we know it, I propped up my dried sheaves of wheat and lavender in purple kernels.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This Blue Star tradition is essential to any Lammas celebration. Symbolizing the sacrifice of the Corn King, this bread man will be cut down in ritual and eaten at feast. Yes, he's...large. And virile. And from his seed the next crops will be sown, so that the wheat will grow, and the harvest will come again, and thus the Wheel turns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - Fight or Flight Photo Project</image:title>
<image:caption>The original inspiration for this shoot was a passing creative thought I had about building a pair of wearable wings made of antlers. Constructed out of wire, tin foil and worbla, then spray painted, decorated and lashed to me a leather bra top, this project ended up being a coming out, of sorts. I now believe I conceived of this as a way of bringing into the forefront of my conscious mind my readiness and willingness to take on responsibility for the coven.</image:caption>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - The Autumn Crown</image:title>
<image:caption>The seasonal crown project started here, as an afterthought accessory. Having decided to add a crown, I chose flowers that appealed to my autumnal nature. It is now an ongoing holiday craft, my intention to eventually have a themed rose crown and antler headband for each Sabbat.</image:caption>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - Antler Wings How-To: Step One</image:title>
<image:caption>First we used one continuous length of wire to create the shape of each antler. Tin foil held the shape before we wrapped it in "worlba". Worbla is a brand of innovative, non-toxic thermoplastics designed to give artists a product that allows endless creativity without sacrificing quality or safety. www.worbla.com</image:caption>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - Antler Wings How-To: Step Two</image:title>
<image:caption>The worbla was light enough and so sturdy we decided to cover the entire antler.</image:caption>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - Antler Wings How-To: Step Three</image:title>
<image:caption>I Mod-Podged newspaper to prepare them to be painted. It was at this step that I also achieved the veined effect at the base of the antlers by using puff paint.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - Antler Wings How-To: Step Four</image:title>
<image:caption>Mounting the antlers to the back plate was really the moment of truth. The plate was cut and shaped to my back. Then we placed the antlers and secured them with strips of worbla. After that we cut a second plate and placed it on top of the first, so that the antlers were sandwiched in between. This is my spray paint job, working in layers with chocolate brown and almond.</image:caption>

<image:title>Antlers & Crowns - Antler Wings How-To: Step Six</image:title>
<image:caption>I hot-glued reindeer moss in some of the joints and hung the bells for some additional visual interest. We ended up losing some of those bells in the woods, but, ya know...fairies. This was also the step where I used some metallic old gold acrylic paint in my palms and gently ran my hands over the raised puff paint, highlighting the veins. I did the same with pearl white on the tips and along the antlers to catch the light.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The leather bra top is the harness holding the wings on. The girlfriend who collaborated with me on this project happened to have a wide belt with really long straps. It was exactly what we needed. I gathered the front with a little leather string to make the bra, and then the long straps tied behind me, looped around each antler, went through the holes in the back plate, over my collar bones, crossed down around the bust line and tied in the back again. Good thing I have, like, no boobs.</image:caption>

That lovely month when ev'ryone goes Blissfully astray. Tra la! It's here! That shocking time of year When tons of wicked little thoughts Merrily appear! It's May! It's May! That gorgeous holiday When ev'ry maiden prays that her lad Will be a cad! It's mad! It's gay! A libelous display! Those dreary vows that ev'ryone takes, Ev'ryone breaks. Ev'ryone makes divine mistakes The lusty month of May!”</image:caption>

<image:title>Wheel of Jam - Tempering the Blade</image:title>
<image:caption>To harden the blade, it needs to be tempered. This requires heating it again and submerging it in oil. The oil then retains the heat longer, allowing the blade to cool slower, hardening it. There was a very dramatic moment with a flaming sword…</image:caption>

<image:caption>Presented with several options, this India deer antler wanted to be a part of our sword. Drilling into it allowed the tang of the blade to slip inside, creating the sword’s handle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here the handle has been fitted but not epoxied. We ended work on Sunday afternoon at this point, so the unfinished blade could be used in ritual, dedicated and consecrated. An Imbolc ritual to Brigid in a forge after a weekend of creating this tool in her honor…was beyond.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Originally conceived with a rose quartz globe mounted in the pommel, Monday’s finishing touches required we rethink the size of the stone for literal and visual balance. Luckily, the local pagan bookstore came through with a selection of rose quartz disks which would do nicely.</image:caption>
